When you’re travelling to Helsinki, you will be expecting a city trip, right? Markets, old buildings, the cathedral… but Helsinki has got so much more to offer. Say hello to Nuuksio.
I spent the last weekend in Helsinki to participate in the travel fair, but I had the Friday off and was invited to do a day trip with a company called Feel The Nature. I have to be honest and say that I even called my mum asking if I could just stay at the hotel because I didn’t want to go at all. I had lived in Helsinki before and seen all of it already. But then I remembered my current motto: take every chance, don’t miss out on anything, live your life. And staying behind in my bed IS NOT living my life. So I went.
And I’m so happy I did! We took a shuttle bus to Nuuksio, which is a national park. Just 20 minutes from Helsinki I definitely wasn’t expecting the lakes, the cliffs and rocks, forests, fireplaces and deepest Finnish nature. I was super tired (from the party the night before) but it only took the forest about 15 minutes to get my inner child climb up hills, sled down hills and bubbling with laughter.
Absolute highlight of the day? The campfire. We melted snow and boiled water over the fire to make coffee, then warmed up Karelian pies (rye dough filled with rice) and cinnamon buns and enjoyed a hot juice with lingonberries in it. There are public campfire spots everywhere and even the wood is in a hut, waiting to be used. And all this right by the city. If you’re ever in Helsinki, don’t miss out on Nuuksio. Or Seurasaari, a much smaller island but even closer to the center. The nature experience you get is wonderful!
What does this teach me? Never say no. Always say yes. You think you’ve seen it all? Well, let me just say, you haven’t. And even if you have, go. I got to bond with the amazing people of the trip. Silvia, Henriikka and I had lots of fun taking photos of each other and David (once again) gave me incredible tips regarding social media, and he also took the shots of me in this post.
And now, see for yourself how beautiful the day was!
